Cloud Dynamics Cumulonimbus clouds

Researchers in this field uses atmospheric sounding, radar, surface, and satellite data to study clouds, cloud properties, and cloud systems. Studies focus on the dynamical, microphysicall, and electrical characteristics of individual convective cells, thunderstorms, and mescoscale convective systems in the tropics and midlatitudes. Other activies include the development and refinement of dynamic and numerical models as well as validation and improvement of the precipitation detection algorithms used by the CHILL Radar Facility. In addition to deep convective clouds, researchers study the dynamics of boundary layer, middle tropospheric stratus, cirrus, and arctic stratus clouds; particularly the effects on them by anthropogenic aerosols.
