The department compiles statistics regarding applications, personnel, students, and graduate employment on a semesterly or yearly basis.
Since 1966, the department has granted 585 M.S. and 241 Ph.D. degrees. Former students hold major positions of responsibility in academia, government service, and private industry. The department is internationally known for its graduate education and research programs in the following areas:
- Air Quality and Atmospheric Chemistry
- Atmospheric Radiation and Remote Sensing
- Atmospheric Water Resources and Hydrologic Cycle
- Global, Regional, and Local Climate
- Regional and Mesoscale Modeling, Analysis, and Forecasting
- Tropical and Marine Meteorology
Each faculty member...
- is recognized nationally and internationally in his/her scientific specialty.
- supports and advises, on the average, seven graduate students.
- maintains, on the average, a grant research volume of $700,000 per year to support research and graduate students.
- publishes, on the average, 5.8 refereed scientific papers per year.
- plays an active role in classroom instruction at all curriculum levels.
- serves on local, state, national, and/or international advisory committees.
Many atmospheric science faculty members were among the top 1.5% of CSU faculty members in terms of five-year research grant volume. Ten of the thirteen faculty members have received major awards in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions over the last five years. Eight of the thirteen faculty members currently hold the rank of Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Four living emeritus faculty members are also Fellows of the AMS. Seven of the thirteen faculty members have served as editors of major scientific journals between 1989 and 2006.
